Kenny Parham Named Head Boys Basketball Coach

San Diego High School is thrilled to announce the hiring of Kenny Parham as its next head boys’ basketball coach.

Parham comes to San Diego High with a resume that includes coaching at the highest levels of New York high school basketball, including a trip to the large schools state final only one season ago. He is moving to San Diego with his family upon his retirement as a public school administrator.

Most recently, Parham led the Bay Shore High basketball team to the New York state final in New York’s large schools division in 2024, the first such appearance in school history. In his three years at Bay Shore, he was named the League Coach of the Year every year. Parham has also coached collegiately at the New York Institute of Technology, where his teams made two NCAA DII tournament appearances. He has been a basketball coach since 1992 and has served as a teacher, dean of students, and vice principal.

“We couldn’t be more excited about the present and future of Caver basketball,” said athletic director Paul Coover. “We were fortunate to have an extremely competitive application process, and ultimately, Coach Parham’s resume, coupled with his proven record of supporting students both on and off the court, makes him an ideal fit for the next chapter in San Diego High School athletics.”

Parham will take over a program that has become a perennial presence in the upper echelons of a competitive San Diego basketball landscape. The Cavers made a CIF-SDS Division 1 postseason appearance in 2025 after earning a co-league championship title, qualified for the California state playoffs in 2024 and 2023, and earned three CIF championships during Coach Basil “Bazz” Fontenot’s time at the helm. Coach Fontenot, a San Diego South Bay resident, will take over the Mater Dei Catholic coaching role close to home in 2025-26.

“I would like to thank Coach Bazz Fontenot for his role in building this program and in supporting our students as an exemplary role model,” Coover said. “Coach Bazz’s resume speaks for itself, and over our four years working together, he was a fundamental part not only of our basketball and track teams, but of our athletic department as a whole. He has also become a close collaborator and friend, and I want to personally thank him for everything he has done for San Diego High and for kids across the city.”

San Diego High is planning a meet-and-greet with Coach Parham in early July, with details to follow. Information will be posted to sdcavers.com as well as the athletic department Instagram, @sdhscaverathletics .
